Abstract:
Two triterpenoid saponins were isolated from an aqueous or a methanolic extract of camellia (Camellia japonica) leaf. They had an antifungal activity characterized by abnormal germination of conidia.
These saponins were composed of 3ß-hydroxy-18ß-acetoxy-28-norolean-12-en-16-one or 3ß 8ß-dihydroxy-28-norolean-12-en-16-one as aglycon, and D-glucuronic acid, D-glucose and two moles of D-galactose as the sugar moiety. The authors have named these new saponins "Camellidin, " which might have value for studies in the fields of phytopathology and biochemistry.

Camellia seed contains 11 to 15% tea saponin, which can be extracted from virgin camellia oil or tea seed cake with special organic solvent.
Chemistry and physics characteristic: Tea saponin’s basic structure is compused by sapogenin (C30H50O6), aglycon and organic acid, which is a kind of pentacyclic triterpene saponin.
Its molecular formula is C57H90O26, molecular weight 1191.28. Pure tea saponin is colorless, minute columnar crystalloid. Melting point is 223-224 (433.4-435.2).
Can be easily dissolved in hydrous methanol, hydrous ethanol, ethanol, n-butylalcohol, glacial acetic acid, acetic anhydride, pyridine and other organic solvent, but can not be dissolved in ether, chloroform, acetone and so on.

Use:

1. Emulsifier: The tea saponin paraffin emulsifier(TS-80 emulsifier) has been widely used in building board industry. Because of small granularity emulsion, level off degree and good stability ,the emulsion’s character is much better than general emulsifier such as: alkyl sodium sulfonate, sodium oleate and ammonium oleate.

2. Detergent: It is a natural nonionic surfactants, be non-poisonous compound after enzymolysis, which can avoid polluting the entironment.
Tea saponin is a stronge decontamination without limitation of Water hardness. Be made shampoo to protect hair, wash hair, eliminate inflammation and stop itching. When it is used as detergent to wash cloth, woolen sweater and fabric, it possesses not only cleansing ability, but also make the cloth fadeless, fresh, bright and soft.
